There are two main competitions in Spanish football that occupy almost all the season. We are speaking about La liga and La Copa del Rey.
La Liga
This is the typical tournament league where every team plays against the others, once as host and once as visitor. We can speak about four divisions here. The first three in the list can be considered as professional football and the last one, third division, as amateur football.
Primera division
This is the most popular division where all the big one teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona or Atletico de Madrid play.
Primera división is formed by 20 teams. Normally starts in middle august and finishes and june or in may depending if euro cup or word cup is scheduled for that year.
At the time of writing this post the easiest way to watch a primera division match is to travel to Elche, which is located 50 kilometers from Orihuela Costa.
Valencia C.F.
Valencia C.F. (Valencia Club de futbol) is one of the spanish historical teams. The team has played almost all the seasons in first division and has more than 100 years of history.
El equipo Ché has won the league tournament 6 times while has won the cup 8 times. They also count on several international trophies.
Valencia play as host in Mestalla stadium. You can normally get tickets to watch a match from 20 euros on. Keep in mind that watching matches against Real Madrid or Barcelona is normally more expensive and more difficult to find tickets.
If interested you can get your tickets here.
Elche C.F.
Elche football club is a modest team that has played 22 seasons in the first division. The club has approximately 10,000 subscribers.
They play their home games at the Martinez Valero stadium, which has a capacity for about 34,000 spectators.
Segunda division
The second division is formed by 22 teams. Normally starts at the same time than first division does but ends later as there are more games to play.
The first two at the end of the league promote automatically to first division while among the following four another one will finally promote.
At the time of writing there are several historical teams playing in this league like Zaragoza, Malaga, Oviedo, Las Palmas or Sporting de Gijon.
The easiest way to watch a match from this league for a person visiting or living in Orihuela Costa is to travel to Cartagena. You can get tickets by clicking here.
Segunda division B
The second division B is formed by four groups of 20 teams each attending to geographical reasons. The top four of every group promote for second division and the bottom for are sent to tercera division. The winner of each group faces the winner of another group in two legs and the winner of that, climbs to second division. The others need 3 eliminatories to ascend.
The 3rd group involves teams from Cataluña, Aragón and Comunidad Valenciana, where Alicante is. Saying this, the shortest trips are to watch Orihuela (40 kms) or Hercules (62 kms), the team of Alicante City. You don’t need to get tickets in advance for these two.
In the 4rd you can find teams from Murcia autonomous community. Watching a match from UCAM Murcia or Real Murcia is at a 60 kilometers distance only.
Tercera division
There are 18 groups formed by 20 teams each. Torrevieja is the nearest team you can find to watch football.
You can get tickets in the stadium from 10 euros.
